Franz Abt (1819 - 1885) was a prodigious composer of vocal music, filling the position of Kapellmeister in a number of German towns (Grove's: 1928). A possible first edition.

The Hundred Pipers. The Celebrated Jacobite Song from MSS Lays of Strathearne.. Edinburgh, Wood & Co. n.d. c.1850s/60s. 5pp + cover. Cover illus. of Prince Charlie on horseback waving his troops on as they ford a river towards a castle on the other side. Historically, it is said that he was preceded into Carlisle by 100 pipers after 2000 highlanders crossed the river Esk at high tide. After the crossing the pipers struck up and they danced reels till they were dry again. Appears to have been carefully removed from an album. Stain discolouration to corner heel of spine, lower RH corner and top edges (not affecting music or illus.), small blue smudge to RH edge of front cover partly affecting illus., pages lightly browned, odd tear to edges, o/wise good.

The illus. is surrounded by an elaborate red & blue border. Catalogue of the series to back cover. Anton Wallerstein (1813 - 1892) was a renowned German composer of dance music, writing 275 works (Grove's: 1945)..
