SHEET MUSIC COLLECTIONS

18570. SHEET MUSIC COLLECTIONS. AUSTRALIAN. CHILDREN'S MUSIC. VARIOUS.

A Collection of Australian Music for Children. The collection is largely made up of songs, with some easy piano music. Many are charmingly illustrated, some by well-known Australian artists. The earliest work is a Cantata written for Arbour Day in 1891, and we have closed the collection at 1970. Other works date from the early 20C. Evocative Australian titles like Fun on the Beach, Mr. Roo, In the Bush, Jolly Bush Cobbers The Wallaby Mail, Percy Platypus, and Under the Coolibah, contrast with Tally Ho, The Alpine Yodeller and even Sicilian Dance. Most distinguished Australian composers have written for children, and so are represented in this fine collection. Much of the charm of the works lies in the cover and title illustrations. There are colour cover illustrations by famous Australian artists: Pixie O'Harris, May Gibbs, Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, and black and white illustrations by Norman Lindsay. Two Ginger Meggs songs are included, and a number of songs featured in radio programs, eg, Kindergarten of the Air.

A CENTURY OF AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN’S MUSIC

A collection of 550 sheets, albums and booklets of music written for children by Australian composers. The earliest piece is a Cantata written for Arbour Day in 1891.  Other early works are, "Australian Songs for Australian Children" of 1902, and "Real Australian Children Songs" by May Brahe, written in 1909.  The collection has been closed at the year 1978.

Evocative Australian titles include “Gum-Trees”, "In the Bush", "Jolly Bush Cobbers”, "Kookaburra", “A Day in the Bush”, and “Percy Platypus”.

The illustrations are very charming.  There are colour and black and white cover illustrations by such famous Australian artists as Pixie O'Harris, May Gibbs, and Norman Lindsay. Ida Rentoul Outhwaite is well represented, and there are appealing drawings of native animals by lesser known artists.

Musically, the range is very broad: - from easy piano pieces ("Tiny Tunes for Wee Australians", "Ten Busy Fingers" ), to choral works, small operettas and musical plays. There are songs for very tiny children ("Kindergarten of the Air"), educational songs for older children ("Safety First Songs for Little Children"),  and songs of national icons  ("Ginger Meggs", "Skippy", "The Magic Pudding").Australian adults could sing along with many of these songs.

There is a broad representation of composers well established in the main stream musical life of Australia. Some names are Frank Hutchens, Peter Sculthorpe, Lindley Evans, May Willis (who was very prolific in this field), Edith Harrhy, Alfred Wheeler, William James, Varney Monk, Mirrie Hill. Indeed it is hard to find a known composer who did not also write specifically for children.

Da Capo, as an important second-hand music dealer in the country, has been uniquely placed to put together this collection, which contains some items not to be found in the major national collections.

22417. SHEET MUSIC COLLECTIONS. AUSTRALIAN. SYDNEY. VARIOUS.

Sydney Collection. A collection of Music Sheets About the City of Sydney. The collection of 50+ sheets spans 160 years, from the early days of music publishing in Australia ( 1840's) to 1988 (the bicentenary). Sydney has been celebrated in song from the early days of settlement, and this is a fine collection of songs and music about the city and about events in its civic history. Many have colourful cover illustrations, others have exuberant paeans of praise to Sydney.

A COLLECTION OF MUSIC ABOUT SYDNEY

This is a collection of 50+ musical items: songs, choral works, piano works.   All are connected with Sydney.    Some by title (Sydney Flour Song, The Song of Sydney, O! Sydney I Love You), others celebrating events in the city’s history, (The Bridge We’ve Been Waiting For”).   The earliest item dates from the 1840’s, the latest (“From Sydney with Love”) was published in 1988.

From the 100 plus titles in the collection it is possible to view the city in music, from the 1840’s to the 1962 sequicentenary winner, Sydney Symphony, by Melvin Morrow.  On the way we pass via mock battle in the Domain in 1860 between Sydney’s 12th Regiment and the Volunteer Rifles, the 150th anniversary of settlement in 1938, a 1968 competition for a song about Sydney.

Sheets with cover illustrations of the city or harbour are included.   The Queen Victoria Building is pictured, as the GPO, the Town Hall, the Conservatorium of Music, Fort Denison, and of course the Bridge and later the Opera House.

Decorative covers reflect the changing times of Sydney, and give a vivid picture of social life.

All great cities have dedicated songs.  The Americans have been prolific in enshrining their own and European cities in popular music.  Australia has produced more songs than one would imagine.  This is the only collection we know of which brings together songs about our own lovely harbour city.

In 1997 Da Capo presented a concert of some of these songs in the State Library of NSW, in conjunction with the Library Society. With a pianist, a tenor, and Patricia Baillie as presenter, this was an opportunity to showcase some of the songs.
