Volunteer March. Polka & Galop.. Woolcott and Clark. J. Degotardi & Co., artist Read. 1855. 8pp. B/W illus. (drawn & engraved by Read) depicting "The Battle of the Bull" in Sydney's Domain, a mock battle carried out by the colony's volunteer forces. An early political cartoon. The central figure of a trumpeter, with the tower of the Government House stables in the background, is surrounded by humourous vignettes of the progress of the "battle". Text is placed above the music such as "near dinner hour that which was before a polka now becomes fast and furious and eventually terminates in a galop during which exuent omnes to God Save the Queen down Bent St., Hunter St, Wooloomooloo etc." Bound in card covers, marbled endpapers, gilt to title. Some wear to spine. Cover reinforced. A few tape repairs to the odd tear & chip. Also present is a lengthy cutting from the Sun newspaper, dated 25/5/40, giving the background of the various volunteer forces & the history of this particular piece. The work appears to be a piano transcription of band music, with references to Haydn, and to "God Save the Queen"..
